Payment of the Funeral
We will provide you with a clear written quotation showing you the total cost of the funeral as well as written confirmation of the funeral arrangements.
The payment of the account is the responsibility of the person arranging the funeral and can be made at the time of arrangement. If this is not feasible, we do ask that all third party payments paid on your behalf be paid at the time of arrangement.
A Basic Cremation must be paid for before the funeral.
Payment of the account can be made by credit card, debit card (Switch, Solo), personal cheque or cash.
The Social Fund
The social fund helps people in need with certain important expenses. This benefit is dealt with by the DWP (Social Fund).
To qualify for help from the Social Fund you must meet certain criteria:
- You must be arranging the funeral and taking personal responsibility for payment of the funeral costs.
- You, or your partner must be currently in receipt of one of the following qualifying benefits: Income Support; Income based Job Seekers Allowance; Family Credit; Disability Working Allowance; Council Tax Benefit; Pension Credit.
If your claim is successful the DWP will pay the cost of cremation fees and associated medical fees or basic burial costs for a single grave together with a maximum amount of £700 towards the Funeral Director’s fees.
Please remember that if the claim does fail, you will still be responsible for payment of the whole cost of the funeral to the funeral home.
Bereavement Benefit
Formerly called Widow's Payment. It provides a tax-free lump sum of £2,000 as soon as you are widowed, as long as you meet the conditions.
Solicitor
In certain circumstances we would advise you to consult a solicitor. This need not involve a great deal of money and will ensure that all legal responsibilities are carried out. They will require the following:
- The Death Certificate
- The Will (if there is one)
- Bank Account numbers
- Premium Bonds
- Share Certificates
- House Deeds
- Insurance Policies
